Five schools to participate at track championships

TIFTON — The city of Jefferson in north Georgia has slightly less than 10,000 people normally. This weekend that number will be rising by a few thousand. Several local schools will be contributing to that spike as the state track meet commences today at Memorial Stadium and ends Saturday.

Fitzgerald of Class AA will be sending the most out of the area. Twelve of their athletes have qualified for the trip. That number is closely followed by Turner County in A (public), who is set to send 11. Cook and Berrien in Class AA and Irwin County in A (public) are also going.

The busiest men will wear purple and blue. Both an athlete for Fitzgerald and Turner has qualified to participate in five events. Mikevion Hall of Turner will be in the pole vault, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and is a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Purple Hurricane Trey Graham is in triple jump, the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles as well as the 4x100 and 4x400 teams.

The rest of Fitzgerald's individual qualifiers are Chandler Eckler and David Howell in pole vault, Romarius Gaulden in long jump, Jarvis Reid in discus, Daniel Rivera in triple jump and the 300-meter hurdles, Chris Smith in the 800-meter run, Antonio Wilcox in the 400 meters and Kelton Williams in high jump. The 4x100 relay team consists of Leo Dabow, Graham, J.D. King, Rivera and Wilcox. It will be Graham, Rivera, Smith, Dicuseul Styer and Wilcox in the 4x400.

Others for Turner's squad participating are Gabriel Banks in the 3200-meter run, Yusef Muhammed in shot put and Keshawn Nelson and Ontario Wilson in the 1600-meter run. Their relay teams are Antozio Dawson, Hall, Malik Holley, Nathan Martin and Travis Smith in the 4x100 and Dawson, Hall, Holley, Martin, Keonte Poke and Wesley Poke in the 4x400.

Irwin also has a relay team going to Jefferson in the 4x100. That consists of Ziaire Andrews, Cartavion Benyard, Tyler Bethune, Ryan Peterson, Qua Tucker and Jakyron Young. Their individual event qualifiers are Peterson and Tucker in the 100-meter dash and Young in triple jump.

Anthony Hill (110 hurdles) and Samuel Jackson (400 meters) are the two individual competitors for Cook, who also has a relay team competing. The relay squad, the 4x400, has Hill, Jackson, Larry Mathis, Malik McCuthen and Khilyd Turner.

Berrien will be represented by a single athlete. Keyshawn Prince qualified to go in shot put, having thrown it for 42'01.5" at sectionals.
