Marsha Marie Gibson Orr

CUMMING — Marsha Marie Gibson Orr, 67, of Cumming, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at Emory Midtown Hospital in Atlanta.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the North Atlanta Church of Christ. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Ridge Avenue Church of Christ in Tifton.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 12:30 until 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Fletcher Cemetery, 1902 U.S. Hwy. 129, Alapaha.

Turner Orr, Marshall Orr, Eli Orr, John Gibson, Travis Lewis, David Lewis, Kevin Pittman and Quinn Godwin will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Hughes Orr and Bowen Orr.

Marsha was born in Memphis, Tenn., the daughter of the late Turner and Marie Higgins Gibson,  June 10, 1946.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, John Hughes Orr Jr.; her two sons and one daughter-in-law, Johnny and Kelly Orr of Birmingham, Ala. and Brian Orr of Cumming; five grandsons, Turner, Marshall, Eli, Hughes, and Bowen Orr and one granddaughter, Mary Abney Orr; her mother, Marie H. Gibson; brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Derry Gibson of Tifton; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Danny Brock of Valdosta; nieces and nephews, Jaycee Pittman, Camille Lewis, Alaina Lewis, Susanna Godwin, Allison White, John Gibson, Kris Brown and Cliff Orr.

She is preceded in death by her father, Otis Turner Gibson and her brother John Terry Gibson. Her grandparents Terry and Allie Marie Gibson and Thomas H. and Grace May Brigance.

Marsha was a graduate of Tift County High School class of 1964. She served as captain of the Blue Devils cheerleading squad. She was chosen as the Tobacco Queen of Tifton. She received an associate’s degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 1965 and a BS from Auburn University in 1967.

After graduation she moved to Atlanta where she was a grade school teacher. Marsha was a long-time member of ALTA tennis where she was a captain and won many city championships. She also enjoyed antique shopping, decorating and garage sales. She was a long-time youth athletic volunteer. Marsha always found a place and time for helping the less fortunate. Her true love was her service to the Lord, her family and others. She was a loving and caring homemaker. Marsha was a long-time member of Decatur Church of Christ and attended North Lake Church of Christ and North Atlanta Church of Christ.

Her family is grateful for her exceptional care at Emory Midtown Hospital and select Medical Hospital under the care of Dr. Francis Owings and at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.
