Bennett to run for school board seat

Mark Bennett announced this week that he intends to run for the District 4 seat on the Tift County School Board, currently held by Rita Griffin, who has said she will not seek re-election.

"It's something I've been thinking about for a while now. I have two small children, one already in the Tift County School system, and one that will be going into it year after next," he said. "It's something that's been on my heart. And I just want to give it a shot."

Bennett, himself a product of the Tift County school system, has a background in business. After graduating in  1988 in Tift County, he attended Valdosta State University where he studied Business Management and Finance, and currently is the General Sales Manager for Griffin Ford, where he's been employed for the past 15 years.

"With my business background, I feel like I can bring something to the board that could be beneficial," he said. "I want to do my part to ensure that my children, and all the children of Tift County, get the best education, and that the teachers are taken care of."

Bennett said he feels the school board "currently is doing a fantastic job."

"We're facing a lot of budget problems. Budget is the No. 1 concern, and we're having to do more with less. I think with my financial background, I feel like I can bring some help to the board that will be beneficial," he added.

Budget and how to properly educate Tift County's children are the major concerns that Bennett feels the board and the school system overall will be facing in the coming years.

"I just hope that I can fill the shoes that Rita's leaving behind," he said.
