James E. “Buckshot” Whitfield

SYLVESTER — James E. “Buckshot” Whitfield, 82, of Sylvester died May 8, 2014 at Southern Care Assisted Living in Tifton. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with interment following at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mr. Whitfield was born on March 6, 1932 in Sylvester to the late Edmund Jacob and Nena Rhoda Coleman Whitfield. He had lived in Sylvester all of his life. He worked in the Worth County School System in several positions during his career. He served as a coach, teacher, principal and school superintendent before retiring.

After retiring, Mr. Whitfield continued to educate by working with Moultrie Tech to help teach young teens in preparation for GED testing. He helped organize the Worth Players. He was also involved in numerous civic organizations. Mr. Whitfield was very active in the Sylvester Lions Club and the American Cancer Society. He was instrumental in helping to establish the Margaret Jones Library.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 38 years to young men. Mr. Whitfield and his wife would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary Nov. 8, 2014.

Survivors include his wife, Clarie Myers Whitfield; son, James “Jimmy” E. Whitfield (Kandy) of Moultrie; daughters, Lauren Newman (Mark) of Senoia, Catherine Orr (David) of Albany and Suzanne Smith (Alan) of Tifton; and grandchildren, Trevor and Sarah Bachman, William, Samuel, Andrew and Caroline Orr, Abby, Nick and Noah Smith, Thomas James Whitfield and Austin Stewart.
