Bernardo “Slim” Avalos Sr.

OMEGA — Bernardo “Slim” Avalos Sr., 90, of Omega died Friday, March 21, 2014, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church with Father Justin Ferguson and Father Alphonso Gutierrez officiating. Interment will follow at Omega Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Avalos was born Aug. 20, 1923 in Palo Blanco Ranch, Texas to the late Antonio Avalos and Anita Leal Avalos.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and a daughter. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army, serving in Italy during World War II. Mr. Avalos was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star during his service. He was a farming crew chief and a loving husband, father and grandfather who put his family and church first in his life. He was a member of Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church and the VFW.

Mr. Avalos is survived by his wife, who he married March 29, 1947, Andrea De Leon Avalos of Omega; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Gonzalo Gonzalez of Tifton, Hilda and Santos Gonzales of Moultrie, Diana and Andrew Mendieta of Omega and Andrea and Ricky Dean of Tifton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bernardo and Bonnie Avalos of Tifton, Louis and Angie Avalos of Omega and David and Francis Avalos of Tifton; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
