A shooting Sunday night in Fitzgerald following a fight resulted in the injury of a 14-year-old female. Police are looking for a Wilcox County man in connection to the crime.
Fitzgerald Police Chief Bill Smallwood said they received a call at 7 p.m. Sunday to respond to the 500 block of West Pine Street in reference to a fight in the alley. Upon arriving on the scene, 911 informed officers that there had actually been a shooting. A fight had occurred an hour earlier in the alley between two people.
Smallwood said following the fight, the incident escalated to the individuals coming back with six or seven people.
“[They] came back again and were going to start another fight,” he noted.
He said a vehicle dropped off two people at the other end of the alley, and one of them started firing. During this time, a 14-year-old girl was struck in the face with bullet fragments. She was taken to Tift Regional Medical Center and then transferred to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. Smallwood said Tuesday that she was expected to be released that day.
The Fitzgerald Police Department has already arrested a 15-year-old male in connection to the crime. He has been charged with aggravated assault. Smallwood said they also have warrants on Bobby Haynes Jr., 40, of Wilcox County for aggravated assault. He noted that there will be additional charges against the offenders. As of Tuesday, Haynes had not been located yet.
Smallwood said they’re working with the Rochelle Police Department and the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office. He said it’s an ongoing investigation and there’s a possibility that there will be more arrests.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Haynes is asked to contact the FPD at 426-5000.
