Panthers rally but can't top Valwood

CHULA —

The Tiftarea Academy Panthers had a late comeback, but their bats could not warm up enough as they were defeated 9-4 by the Valwood Valiants on a chilly Friday night.

Valwood was scoreless for their first two frames, but had runs in each of the innings that followed. The Panthers would go through five pitchers in an attempt to slow down the offense. Starter Ethan Bryant worked 3 2/3 innings, giving up five earned runs.

Tiftarea was the first to get a hit when Rob Flick had a single in the 1st. Cade Marlowe would walk to put a second man on base, but they were unable to move either of them any further. Flick would have to exit the game in the 4th when he had to be helped off the field.

The Valiants got on the board in the 3rd when a pair of walks were followed by a single by J.C. Carroll that scored a run. A strikeout looked to limit the damage to one, but Jake Chandler's base hit drove in two more.

Pete Perrin would be called upon for relief in the 4th when Bryant surrendered two more off a single by Eli Carlo.

The Panthers answered back with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Greer Howard dribbled a ball in front of the plate and sprinted down the line. The throw from the catcher went wild, putting him at second. He moved to third on a comebacker by Noah McMinn then came home on a wild pitch.

Perrin's luck was better, but Valwood touched him for a run in the 5th. Another scored in the 6th and two more crossed in the 7th.

Marlowe's one-out single created a bit of magic for Tiftarea as he was doubled in by Thomas Spurlin, who then scored on McMinn's two-bagger.
