Bank in Alapaha robbed

TIFTON — The Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as local law enforcement are looking for suspects after a bank robbery in Alapaha Friday morning.

The Bank of Alapaha on Railroad Street was robbed by at least two people who left a suspicious package on the counter, telling bank employees the package contained a bomb. One of the suspects was carrying a shotgun.

"One of the robbers vaulted the teller counter with a handgun and an improvised explosive device that was later determined to be an inert hoax device," the FBI said in a statement.

No one was hurt during the robbery, and an undisclosed amount of money was taken.

The suspects were searched for by law enforcement Friday afternoon, and the GBI Bomb Disposal Unit was called in to dispose of the package.

A white, four-door sedan was found about 3 miles from the robbery site, on St. Luke Church Road, engulfed in flames. Investigators examined the car, which was believed to be the getaway car, and believe the suspects burned the car. Two other vehicles were used to leave the area: an older model green Ford Explorer and a burgundy Cadillac Escalade-style SUV.

Investigators have a security camera image of a man who is a person of interest in the case, taken at Jernigan's Farm Service and Supply.

The investigation is ongoing.
