Here’s to sports in 2014 and what we’d like to see

As we roll in to 2014, I can't help but think of wishes for local, state and national athletes for this year.

Tift County boys basketball: Sunglasses for the Valdosta games. For those who missed the McDonald's Invitational, the team-issued shoes this year for the Wildcats are lime green. As a reminder, their team colors are black and gold.

Tift County girls basketball: Home games. The Lady Devils have put in many miles on the road and open 2014 at Brunswick.

Tift County football: Patience. You're building towards great things.

Tiftarea Academy football: A 10-game schedule. After two straight years of Ryan Branch playing 11 regular season games, something tells me that this one may happen.

Fitzgerald football: Health. I don't believe that Jason Strickland was ever able to assemble the same offensive line two consecutive weeks, plus he had several backfield injuries.

Irwin County football: Five more minutes.

Cook football: Though Ken Cofer recently resigned, that not many stadiums in Class AAAA have cannons.

Berrien football: A bigger roster.

Turner County football: Home playoff games.

Worth County football: A schedule that does not end with back-to-back games against Monroe and Westover.

To some sports team somewhere: Use classical as warm-up or walk-up music. I once watched a team psyche out another with an Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas CD. I believe classical would do the same. Come on. You know "In the Hall of the Mountain King" would be awesome.

Georgia Bulldogs football: That the words "anterior cruciate ligament" be stricken from medical dictionaries.

Atlanta Hawks: Deep regret. The team was really coming along and then Al Horford gets hurt again.

Atlanta Braves: A change of heart on stadiums. I would be willing to compromise with a special lane on I-75 for south Georgians, not unlike the HOV lane.

Atlanta Falcons: A good pinch. This season had to be just a dream. Right?

And in the words of Gomer Pyle, "Lots of luck to you and yours."
