Rebels, Lady Rebels sweep Clinch County in region play

HOMERVILLE — The Turner County Rebels and Lady Rebels traveled here Saturday night and came  home with a pair of Region 2-A victories over Clinch County.

In girls action, the Lady Rebels would emerge with a hard fought 63-57 win in overtime over the Lady Panthers of Clinch County. The Rebels would have an easier time of it with a 75-53 win.

The Lady Rebels opened up a big lead behind sophomore Xariah Office's 10 points in the 1st quarter, that helped Turner lead 18-10 after the opening period.

After the 1st,neither team could not find the bottom of the basket as only 5 points was scored between both teams. Turner would have the lead at half 21-12.

In the 3rd, the Lady Panthers scored one more point than Turner as both teams exploded for 41 combined points as Clinch outscored the Lady Rebels, 21-20. Clinch had actually came out and took the lead briefly during the third quarter with three and half minutes left at 27-26.  Brishuana Barnes hit a layup to give Turner the lead back.

The 4th period, saw the Lady Panthers outscore Turner, 20-12 to force the overtime.

In overtime, Turner freshman Mylashia Yancey would take the game over and drive the lane and grab rebounds. She would hit 6 of 8 free throws to help the Lady Rebels garner the victory.  Yancey finished with 27 points, and Office added 15.

The Lady Rebels head into the Ronalda Pierce Holiday Hoopfest on Friday with a 7-1 record and 4-0 in league play. They will face Stewart County around 7 p.m. Friday.

In boys action, the Rebels had a 17-12 lead after the 1st quarter, and that was the close as the Panthers would get.

Antonio Graddic led Turner with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Quan Williams contributed 10 points, while Malik Brown and Iman Holley each added 9.  Brown was one rebound and one point away from a double-double.

The Rebels will face Thomas County Central Friday during the Holiday Hoopfest.    

Games will take place Friday, Saturday and Monday and the games will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Other teams include Wilcox. Pelham, Thomas County Central,  Warner Robins, Coffee, Lowndes and Stewart.

    LEOs and first responders honored at banquet

    A room full of local law enforcement and first responders were honored Thursday night by the Tifton Elks Lodge at their annual Public Safety Officer Appreciation and Awards Banquet for their service in the community.
    Prior to the awards being given out, Louise Spradley, who organized the banquet, welcomed everyone, and the invocation and pledge were led by the Tift County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard.
