Rants & Raves - December 24

In reply to "if you don't like the rules, don't buy property in Historical District,” I bought property in down town long before it was declared historical. There wasn't anything in down town historical then and still isn't. Most of the people on the Historical Preservation Commission never lived in Tifton 50 to 70 years ago and don't know what Tifton was then. If they want to be historical authorities, they should move to a town with a legitimate historical downtown.
As another person posted earlier this week, the old ice house is not a state matter. The Historic Preservation Commission issued an "opinion" because they were asked to. HPC will not overrule a local decision on this matter. The city has set invalidating precedence with regards to the Historic District, i.e. CVS, Walgreen’s and Virginia Place, just name a few. No one in their right mind in state government will interject on this matter. City officials, do your job.
Detroit has gone bankrupt. Tifton is on a similar path. We have lost our largest industries, unemployment is more severe than the statistics show because they don't even count the people who have given up getting a job and resigned themselves to government benefits.  Doing the same things over and over and expecting different results is stupidity.
We need a change and we need it now. Fast food restaurants and hotels owned by people who take the profits back with them to other towns doesn't help our local economy. How about some innovative thinking?
