Rants and Raves for December 22

These half-days for students have to stop. They are a logistical nightmare. It's easier to deal with a whole day off than a half day. Just stop this ridiculous nonsense and either have a school day or don't.

Hmmm...Phil Robertson booted from A&E? He is a southern Christian who likes guns, hunts, kills and eats animals. Suprised they let him on television in the first place. Media types support the 1st amendment provided it supports their beliefs. Just another media lynching!

Rep. Jack Kingston wants to require poor school kids to do janitorial work to pay for their lunch. Great idea, Kingston. Let's make sure that these kids know they are poor and different from other kids who can pay for their lunch. Believe me, Kingston, they already know they are poor. That is a stupid and degrading idea. Who voted for this guy?

It bothers me that people can say anything in the Rants & Raves and have it accepted as fact, because nothing is said to clarify it. For instance, a rant said the city government is not a part of the Historic District. Actually, the district is so designated by city ordinance with separate requirements, because the residents of Tifton desired it to be so. Look up Tifton.net and read the ordinances.

The ice house issue is a state problem. The local historic commission approved tearing down that building and putting up a bank, which is the right thing to do. It is the state that is holding it up. By the way, there are financial incentives available for restoring buildings in the city historic district. I'm glad to see such landmarks preserved as the Myon and Lankford Manor, both part of our local heritage.

I sincerely hope that The Historic District sticks to their guns against the bullies in this town that want to change it. If you're going to complain about something people, at least investigate and get the facts. If you don't like the regulations that the HD has don't buy the property and try to force the changes that you want. I have lived in this town for over 50 years and all we need is another bank, another lawyer and more uninformed bullies. Remember there are more people in this town besides the self-important few.

A vocal minority is stirring up trouble in Tifton's Historic District. The silent majority want the district to stay within its guidelines. That's what my neighbors tell me. They depend on the City Council and the mayor to uphold the law and requirements to preserve the historic, architectural and aesthetic significance of Tifton's Historic District.
