Tifton worker dies in accident

MOULTRIE — A Berlin motorist died Tuesday afternoon in a head-on collision in Thomas County and a Hartsfield man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle on Wednesday morning.

Mary Jean Haynes, 31, of Berlin was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident at the intersection of Georgia Highway 122 and Airport Road outside Thomasville, Thomas County Coroner Sam Brown said.

The wreck occurred shortly after 3 p.m. when Haynes’ Toyota Corolla collided with a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck driven by Sterling Knight Alligood, 37, of Ochlocknee, Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chris Hosey said. Haynes was driving east at the time on Highway 122.

“(She) went to overtake a vehicle that was turning left at Airport Road and struck a vehicle traveling westbound head-on,” Hosey said.

Haynes was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, he said. There were no passengers in either of the vehicles.

Alligood, who was conscious and talking at the scene, was taken to Archbold Memorial Hospital, Hosey said.

Shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday a motorist reported seeing a motorcycle down near the intersection of Rossman Dairy Road and Tucker Lane, where Henry J. Reid II was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later, Colquitt County Coroner Verlyn Brock said. Reid was a Tifton native, and employed as a machinery operator with Orgill Inc. in Tifton.

Reid, 24, now of Hartsfield, lost control of his motorcycle in a curve on Rossman Dairy Road, left the roadway and the motorcycle struck a culvert. He died of blunt trauma injuries, Brock said.
