Turner’s Alfau wins state title

TIFTON — The weekend state wrestling championships results saw one area wrestler bring home a state title Saturday, two more finish second and several place.

The state title in the Class A's 152-pound division went to J.J. Alfau of Turner County. Alfau had a major decision in the championship, defeating Will Jacks of Gordon Lee, 20-7. He won his other two tournament matches by pin.

The second place wrestlers were Malik Holley (Turner) and Hunter Kelley (Berrien). Kelley, who won a state title in 2013, was defeated in the finals by Chase Piperato of Jefferson, 3-2, in the Class AA tourney. Holley won his first two matches by points before losing 4-2 to Trent Reddish of Commerce.

Turner, who finished fourth overall with 88 points, had all six of their wrestlers place.

Antozio Dawson (126) and Alton Lawson (285) both took third place while Tanner Crawford (132) and Wes Poke (145) each were fifth.

Poke perhaps earned himself a place in the record books in his last match. The Georgia High School Association's results give him a 4-second pin against Cody Spicer.

Irwin County, who also participated in the Class A tourney, had three wrestlers place. Evan Paulk (145) took fourth place and Morgan Mitchell (126) and Micah Powers (220) both had fifth place finishes.

In Class AA, Cook's Artero Perez was fifth at 152 pounds and Raheem Coxfield was sixth at 170.
