William Hubert (Bart) Cowart Sr.

IRWIN COUNTY — William Hubert (Bart) Cowart Sr., 77, of Irwin County died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at his residence. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors with the Rev. Clark Lee and Dr. Fred Evers officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

Mr. Cowart was born Sept. 8, 1936 in Berrien County to the late Fred L. and Edna Mathis Cowart. He was a retired factory representative with Conwood Corporation. He attended Empire Primitive Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.

He studied the Bible with a special interest in prophecy. Mr. Cowart had a strong work ethic and was a humble servant who honored his parents and loved his family. The family relied on his keen memory for the minutest detail of past dates and events. In his younger years, he played basketball and was a switch hitter in baseball in south Georgia and Jacksonville, Fla. He enjoyed fishing and fish fries with family where “pickin’ and singing” was a must.

Mr. Cowart is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dianne Dickson Cowart of Irwin County; three children and spouses, Bonnie C. and Jasper Tenney of Homosassa, Fla., William H. Jr. and Marcia of Richmond, Va. and Beth C. and Gary Young of Ocilla; five grandchildren, William Maddox, William H. III, Hannah and Katy Cowart and Jake Young; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Sorrell, Mary Conger and Betty Harrell; and a brother, David Cowart. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Jr. and Terrell Cowart; and a sister, Eloise Nichols.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels of Tifton, P.O. Box 2053, Tifton, GA, or Hospice of Tift Area, P.O. Box 747, Tifton, GA 31793.
