State wrestling championships postponed by GHSA

TIFTON — The GHSA announced Wednesday afternoon that the wrestling state tournament will be postponed until Feb. 21-22. It also announced that it is looking for an alternative site to host the event.

The Gwinnett Arena, which was originally tabbed to be site of the championships, was said by the GHSA to be unavailable because of prior commitments because of the change in dates.

In a statement on its website, the organization said, "there remains the possibility of more ice and snow in many parts of the state.  We agree with the school systems that the safety of students, athletes and their supporters must be a major consideration when making decisions and support them in their efforts."

Weather has also affected the start of the state basketball tournament. The GHSA had planned to start the tournaments next Wednesday, but has postponed them until a later date. It will meet Friday to determine when.
