Adams going for 3rd state mat championship

TIFTON — Tiftarea Academy goes to the GISA state wrestling tournament this weekend in Macon and while several Panthers have the opportunity to win individual state titles, one is looking for something even better.

Senior John Adams, who competes in the 152-pound class, is aiming for his third consecutive crown. Adams won his first title in 2011, pinning his opponent in the 132 finals. In his next year of competition, he took a 4-3 decision in 138 pounds. He has a bye in the first round of this year's tournament, one of four Panthers to have one.

The other three wrestlers who are automatically going to the second round are Luke Dean (132), Taylor Dukes (145) and Phillip Austin Woods (170).

Tiftarea, who finished seventh in 2013, is also sending Alex Richter (106), Jace Newton (120), Zach Willis (138) and James Allen Bryant (195).
