Swim Devils headed for state

TIFTON — A full bus of Tift County Swim Devils will be making their way to Atlanta later this week to participate in the state swim meet at Georgia Tech. Coach Ivey Vickers said the team will be leaving Thursday, with their part of the meet taking place Friday. Vickers is assisting head coach Marci Honeycutt.

The team has participants in eight different events, though nine individuals or relay teams have qualified. Five will swimming three times and another will have a chance to place in two races. Two relay teams will be in the same event

Hunter Cross will be swimming solo twice, in the 50 freestyle and 100 fly and will join teammates in the 200 freestyle relay. The combination of Mary Shoup, Madison Honeycutt, Anna Lee Atwater and Katelyn Seymour will be in the 200 medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Casey Hall will be in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Cross's teammates in the 200 will be Hank McElroy, Connor Jacobson and Drew Wyatt. The second group swimming will be Noah Daniel, Ben Douglas, Jacob Harper and Alexander Meadows.

Cross made it into the 50 freestyle by the skin of his teeth. His time for the event was 23.49 seconds. The state cutoff was 23.5. Similarly close was the boys 200 freestyle team. Their time was 1:39.59, just a few tenths below the 1:40 line.

The girls 200 freestyle team put the most distance between their time and the cutoff. They swam in 1:52.33, with the cut being 2:07. Hall was 8 seconds ahead of the pace in the 500 freeestyle.
