Region meet next up for Swim Devils

TIFTON — With the Region 1-AAAAAA swimming tournament this Thursday at Darton College, the Tift County Swim Devils are making their preparations.

"This is a big day for us," said co-head coach Ivey Vickers. "I hope we do well."

They look to be in great shape.

At last Saturday's Trojan Invitational, the team's combined scores landed them a 1st place finish, 22 points over 2nd place Camden County. The girls also beat out Camden, 70-52, for the top spot while the boys were 2nd to Coffee.

Five races were won by Devils. Mary Shoup won by four seconds in the 200-yard individual medley, the 200 freestyle relay went to Katelyn Seymour and Madison Honeycutt, Shoup and Anna Lee Atwater. Seymour won by 8 seconds in the 200 freestyle, Haley Walker was the winner in the 100-yard backstroke and Atwater won the 100 freestyle. Impressively, four of the top five places  in the latter went to Tift swimmers.

Vickers, working with Marci Honeycutt to lead the team, said it had been a total team effort. She did not name names, but did say there had been a few surprises. "Several have done better than we thought."

There have been some challenges. Meets have been outdoors, Vickers said. Even with the relatively mild south Georgia winters, January has had cold snaps.
