Rants & Raves - July 17

TIFTON —

Dr. Eddie Seagle says the gingko tree species "dates back many centuries." That is quite an understatement. The species is known in the fossil record from 270 million years ago.

It is sad to see someone talk about getting refunded for the poor performance by the football team. These kids are striving to improve each year. Shame on you. Attitudes like this are why the kids attitudes get the way they do. You need to support them no matter what. My grandson may not play, but it is more than winning or losing to him. I am outraged at your response.

SPLOST was pitched to citizens of Tift County as a way to prevent property tax increases. This has not been the case. The school board can purchase property for use 10 years into the future, but not prevent tax increases now. It looks like this raw deal needs to be reconsidered or eliminated as deceptive advertising.

Can't afford a  new $50,000 Suv? Go to the Tift County teacher's parking lots and look around.  You're in the wrong business.

You ask who pays my insurance premiums along with the yearly increases it brings. I do, and I do it with no help from the school board, that's for sure. If I happen to get a cost of living raise it is rarely enough to cover insurance premium increases or new tax increases.

With all the ranting going on in The Gazette, why isn't anyone ranting about all the properties controlled by the Tift County Development Authority that don't pay property tax? It is not fare to all those commercial properties that do pay tax. How can you get on the list?  Now that is something to really get upset about.

There are two very old houses that are in bad need of repairs or removal that are located across the street from the front of the Tift County Administration Building. I think that both houses are owned by Tift County (no loss of tax revenue if removed. A very poor view for all that are using the beautiful Administration Building. Would a better use of this land be to remove the two houses and a replace with much needed court parking or "green space" or a combination of both?
