Rants & Raves - July 3

TIFTON —

Schools Superintendent Atwater's letter was informative and helpful. Tift County's school system has always been well run. I agree with other rants that Gov. Deal and the legislature have indirectly increased local property taxes. This tax increase may play well in a Republican primary (you can fool some of the people all the time), but I wonder how it will play out in a general election in the fall.

Same old smoke and mirrors, BOE.  Do you really need to justify your position with a dissertation of numbers?  It is no secret that Tifton's priorities regarding education are not prioritized to benefit the students and staff, but to ensure that no one gets their feelings hurt but to maintain their "status" as superintendent or a member of the BOE.  The system is so broken, no one even knows where to start mending.  People are just plain tired of being taxed to death while not seeing an advancements.  I believe a fruit basket turnover may fix some things.

The City Council is debating hiring security people to cover all the doors of City Hall?  Let me be the first to say, you don’t need to.  The law abiding citizens who have a permit to carry a gun that walk into City Hall will be your security.  You don’t need protection from law abiding citizens. You need protection from criminals and the law abiding citizens who have a gun will be protecting you.  Matter of fact, take a gun course and learn to use a gun and carry your own gun to the meetings.

Cut the air conditioners in the schools to where they won't cool lower than 85 and won't heat higher than 60.  The utility bills will have a savings of over 50 percent and presto, you are back in the black with the budget.  Issue fans to each room to keep the air moving if necessary.  It will then be more comfortable than it was when I was going to school and there were no air conditioners.
