Child dies in Monday morning accident

A one-vehicle wreck early Monday morning left a child dead and a mother injured.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Michael Spells told The Tifton Gazette that he was notified at 5:40 a.m. about the accident, which occurred on Zion Hope Road.

He said Matisha Exum Davis, 31, of Brookfield was driving a 2000 Nissan Xterra with her four-year child, Abigail Anne Davis, in the vehicle when it went off the edge of the roadway and overturned.

Spells said both occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Neither was wearing a seat belt, and the child was not in a car seat.

Spells said Davis' daughter was pronounced dead at the scene. Davis was taken to Tift Regional Medical Center and was later life-flighted out to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. He said he doesn't know her condition at this time.

Also, the cause of the accident is not known at this time. Spells said they are still trying to determine exactly where Davis' daughter was sitting in the vehicle when the accident occurred.
