2nd annual Bike to Farm Tour

TIFTON — The Tiftarea Greenways Association (TAGA)  is partnering with the Wiregrass Farmers Market  and the Tift County Recreation Department  to put on the second annual Wiregrass Bike to Farm Tour on Saturday morning, June 7.  This family friendly cycling event is meant to celebrate our local farms and promote cycling in the community. Participants will bicycle to up to six sites of agricultural interest in Tifton and Tift County, where they will get to take tours highlighting some aspect of food production or green technology.

There will be a short 6-mile loop that goes to a city garden with living fences and a variety of unusual  crops, a futuristic farmstead featuring the latest in green building technologies, and a quaint farmers market.  For those riders up to a longer ride, there is a 16-mile spur route that will take cyclists to a pick-your-own berry operation, a large  commercial vegetable farm, and a small family run cut flower farm.  To complete both the short loop and the spur requires pedaling around 35 miles total.

Participants will enjoy brief tours of each site before moving on to the next one.  The event begins early in the day to avoid summer's heat and traffic.  Registration is from 7-7:45 a.m. at the Tift County Recreation Department on North Victory Drive.  There will be a mass start of all riders at 8 a.m.  Riders need to finish by 1 pm.

Registration is available at the Tift County Recreation Dept. or on-line through Active.com. There is a discount for early registration before May 26 and for families of two or more.  Registration includes an event T-shirt and refreshments at a couple of the stops.  Helmets must be worn to participate. There will be a vehicle supporting the riders along the course.

For more information, go to the Facebook event page for the Wiregrass Bike to Farm Tour or visit the websites for TAGA, the Wiregrass Farmers Market, or the Tift County Recreation Dept.  You can also call 229-392-5513.
