Visitor finds Tifton to be a rare jewel on I-75

TIFTON —

On July 3, while in the waiting room of the Wal-Mart automotive department, another customer asked me and a very sweet lady from Tifton in the waiting room also, if we knew how long it would take to get to Atlanta. She explained that she and her husband were not from Tifton but a tire failure on their mini-van on I-75 had brought them to Wal-Mart of Tifton.
She explained that she and her husband were not just elderly but also handicapped and when their van tire failed on I-75 in Tift County that they were able to drive onto the I-75 shoulder but very close to the travel lane. A quick call to AAA told them that it would be 30 to 60 minutes before help would arrive. They asked AAA to call for a police car to help keep traffic from hitting their van from the rear.
Very shortly a Tift County Sheriff's Deputy arrived and used his vehicle to identify the stranded van to oncoming motorists. The lady said the deputy told them he was going to replace their tire with the van's spare. He moved all their luggage to get to the spare tire and then made the tire exchange and aided them in getting to Wal-Mart to get another spare for their trip (Just in case of another tire issue on their trip).
The lady said she and her husband were astonished at the courtesy and concerns for them by the deputy, who she said could have easily sat in his air conditioned patrol car and avoided a very hot tire exchange, until AAA arrived.
She and her husband were so impressed with the deputy, the Wal-Mart staff and the local customers they had met. She asked if everyone in the Tifton community was as noble, to which she was assured that it was a community that considers helping others to be a priority. I told her of how out-of-town people who were patients in our local hospital from illness or injury would receive visits from local citizens.
She could not believe how our dear community had not been found by others. She asked for the local newspaper's address so she could write a note of praise for the Tifton community, and said that, "You people have a very rare and special community here."
