Future Fishermen do well at Texas tourney

TIFTON — Five Blue Devil anglers had a respectable finish at Sam Rayburn in Texas last weekend as part of the Texas High School Open.

The team finished 39th out of 132 teams, landing several big fish in the process.

Dylan Merritt and Hunner Pritchett weighed in three fish at 6 pounds, 12 ounces.  Tripp McKee and his partner, Bryson Walker, brought back one fish at 5 pounds, 1 ounce and Damion Jewell had one fish at 3 pounds.

Coach Bruce Begue said "they caught somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-30 fish, but all of those were too short to bring to the scales." Conditions were perfect at the reservoir, he said, but minimum length for fish was 14 inches. "They were on the fish all day,” he said.

He said one of the Texas participants brought a fish that weighed 22 pounds to the scales. "I knew it would take 20-plus pounds to win it, but I'm so proud of our boys and their efforts."

Begue was thankful for all the support he was given from multiple individuals and organizations. He also wanted to announce a big event was being planned for Lake Seminole in September. The team was to co-host a national open with Bainbridge High, he said, that would be a three-day event involving nine states and would have five scholarship opportunities.

"The sport of high school fishing is about to blow the lid off things in the state of Georgia," he said. He was hopeful of having the details worked out by the end of July. He said if anyone wanted to become a sponsor for the even at the Bainbridge boat basin landing to contact him at bbegue@ tiftschools.com for more information.
