Four Tift County swimmers qualify for state

TIFTON — Four Tift County Swim Devils have earned state tournament berths after competing Saturday at the Clarke-Oconee Invitational at the University of Georgia's Ramsey Center.

The four going to state were in a single race, the girls 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Katelyn Seymour, Madison Honeycutt, Mary Shoup and Anna Lee Atwater finished 2nd in the race, behind a group from North Oconee.

Overall, the team placed 7th out of 24 schools with 258 points. The girls were 5th and the boys were 8th. North Oconee won the competition with 733 points. They also were tops in the girls competition and second to in-county rival Oconee County in the boys.

While the 400 relay team were the only ones to qualify for state, several other swimmers finished in the top 10.

In the boys 200-yard medley relay, the team of Hunter Cross, Hank McElroy, Connor Jacobson and Drew Wyatt finished 7th. The groups was also 9th in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The 200-yard freestyle relay also had the team of Ben Douglas, Noah Daniels, Alexander Meadows and Jacob Harper earn 10th place.

Shoup, Honeycutt, Atwater and Seymour were 9th in the 200-yard medley relay.

Seymour also had a 9th place finish in the girls 200-yard freestyle.

Cross came in 9th in the boys 200-yard individual medley and was No. 5 in the 100-yard fly.

Nine was a magic number for the Blue Devils. That was also the finish for Claire Ryland in the 50-yard freestyle.

In both the girls 100-yard fly and 100-yard freestyle, Atwater had a 6th place finish.

Casey Hall earned 4th place in the girls 500-yard freestyle and 5th in the 100-yard backstroke.
