Give back while you give to others

TIFTON —

The United Way of South Central Georgia has many ways to raise funds to support its programs and provide assistance for local residents. But one of its newest ways is an online store, located on the organization's website at www.uway-socenga.org.

In the online store, you can purchase a meal from the Meals on Wheels program for just $3.35, eyeglasses for a student in need for $163.80, or one day of lunch service for the Tiftarea Soup Kitchen for $111.09. You can also purchase a sack of Christmas toys for $26.25, or provide a GED scholarship, equal to half the amount of testing fees, at $84. You can also purchase two scholarships, which will provide the full cost for one student to earn his or her GED.

The meal from Meals on Wheels will be delivered to a shut-in through a partnership with the Tifton Meals on Wheels program. The meals are delivered each weekday about noon. Students in need of eyeglasses are selected through the Needy Children's Fund, serving Tift County's students.

Particularly timely this season is the sack of Christmas toys. Your purchase of this item will enable a purchase of two or three toys, a board game and a ball for children served through the United Way's partnership with various agencies throughout the region. The toys are distributed to children in Ben Hill, Irwin, Tift and Turner counties.

There is also the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets in the 12 Days of Christmas drawings, which began earlier this month. You can purchase tickets online in the store, or from the United Way locally.

Prizes include $50 gift cards on days 1-5 and $100 cards on days 6-10 from Belk, JC Penney, Publix, TJ Maxx and Walmart. On day 11, there's a $250 cash prize, and $500 cash prize on day 12. Drawings began on Dec. 2, but it's not too late to purchase tickets.
