Track and field honored at banquet

TIFTON — It was an indoor meet for Tift County Blue Devil track athletes Tuesday night. Abandoning cleats, shot puts and pole vaults the teams gathered at Northeast Campus for the annual track and field banquet, where coaches Mike Collier and Alonzo Hampton spoke of the seasons and recognized their teams.

Both coaches had words of encouragement for their charges. Collier said, "I saw significant improvement from last year to this year. I thought the girls performed well this year."

Collier's team was 2nd at the Blue Devil Invitational, placed in the top five at meets at Monroe and Westover and were third in the region. He also expressed thanks to Cherrisa Brockington for her help with the squad.

Hampton, who was joined by Anthony Bateman and Dave Roberts at the podium, said he was honored to coach this group. "It has truly been a joy coaching you guys," he said. This biggest cheer of the evening possibly came during Hampton's presentations when he said "no one works harder than track athletes."

Praise also went to parents. "Thanks parents for letting me coach your girls," Collier said. Hampton added, "you have been tremendous all year."

Both coaches presented certificates to every team member. Lettermen awards went to any athlete who earned points in the region meet. Each also presented plaques to their players who qualified for the state tournament, with Hampton also presenting a set of awards for individual achievement.

Boys top thrower went to Javier Clark, the top jumper was Dalton Ellis, top distance runner was presented to Isaiah Fullmore, hurdler to Danny Patterson, sprinter to D.D. Walker and most valuable player honors went to Patterson.

Tift had Dalton Ellis (pole vault) and Jermarion Billington, Danny Patterson, D.D. Walker, Josh Ajiero and Barry Bennett (4x400) qualify for the state boys meet and Katie Utley (pole vault), Staceyanna Murrell (discus and shot put), Quasha Fergerson (shot put) and Sky Moore (400 meters) participated for the Lady Devils.
