Tiftarea rallies together for Tift County Goes Purple

TIFTON — Tift County and surrounding counties are acknowledging 2014 Lupus Awareness Campaign this month as volunteers in Tiftarea rally together today for Tift County Goes Purple 2014 to urge action and raise awareness of lupus, a mysterious and devastating disease that ravages different parts of the body.

Thousands of people from around the country will put on purple today in order to spread awareness of lupus. All local residents are encouraged to join in and get your family, friends, team members and coworkers involved for this year's event. As part of Lupus Awareness Month activities, the public can show their support and help solve the cruel mystery by participating throughout the month of May and June by wearing purple every Friday with jeans.

Pat McKinnon, a local volunteer, wants all survivors and supporters to "band together, tell the story and change lives." Today, Lupus Awareness 2014 serves as a centerpiece of the lupus community’s annual grassroots effort to raise awareness of this unpredictable and sometimes fatal disease, secure funds for lupus research and support those who suffer from the disease.

“We need everyone’s support to fight lupus and find a cure,” says McKinnon.

Lupus is more widespread than most people realize. In fact, research shows most Americans know little or nothing about lupus and its overwhelming impact.

“We can change that, but we need your support,” said McKinnon.
