T.J. Maxx coming to Tifton

TIFTON — With Publix soon opening, the citizens of Tifton will be glad  to know that department store T.J. Maxx will also be coming here, and is projected to open Oct. 25 of this year.

Vicki McKellar, manager of the Tifton Mall, told the Gazette that the local mall owns the old Winn Dixie building located adjacent to the mall on Virginia Avenue, which is where T.J. Maxx will be located.

McKellar said the company Pellicano Construction will be working on the construction of the building; the demo release was recently signed and demo-ing is currently in progress nearing completion.

She explained that a new roof will be placed on the Winn Dixie building and everything from inside the building has been taken out. She stated that there will be new plumbing and much more — the whole nine yards.

Also, McKellar said the mall will be getting a facelift. She stated that they will be painting and getting new carpet. Some stores inside the mall are looking to expand as well. In addition, she noted that other stores are expected to open inside the mall, but she’s not at liberty to say which ones at this time.

“We’re going to be full,” McKellar stated. “It’s going to be awesome. Tifton will be really surprised and is going to be happy.”

She added, “We’re hoping that with T.J. Maxx and Publix, they will generate a lot of business.”

She stated that cleaning up the abandoned Winn Dixie building and to have it function again is an asset to Tifton and the mall.

McKellar said T.J. Maxx showed interest in opening in Tifton prior to Publix coming here; however, they committed after learning that Publix was indeed coming to Tifton.

“Publix coming here pretty much closed the deal,” she stated.

She also noted that more interest has been generated from other stores looking to come to Tifton.

“It’s been a plus-plus for the mall and Tifton also,” McKellar said.

When asked about the number of job positions that will be available when T.J. Maxx opens, she stated, “We’re in stage 1 right now. I’m not sure on how many job positions but there should be quite a few.”

She added, “Surely it will promote more income in Tifton and will produce more jobs.”
