Fugitive from Puerto Rico arrested in Tift County

TIFTON — Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough reports that on May 31, Tift County deputies assisted the U.S. Marshall’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force in the arrest of 28-year-old Jayson Santiago-Hidalgo at a residence on Love Avenue in Tifton.

Scarbrough advised the task force had received information that Santiago-Hidalgo, who is wanted by authorities in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on charges of failure to appear to answer charges of attempted murder and four counts of weapons law violations, was in Tifton.

Authorities went to the residence, located the suspect and arrested him without incident.

Additional charges of escape were filed against Santiago-Hidalgo when he ran from officers after he had been taken into custody. He was caught after a brief foot chase.

He remains in the Tift County Jail awaiting extradition proceedings.
