TIFTON — The Tift County Blue Devils lost their first game Wednesday afternoon to the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs, 4-3, after a 7th inning comeback. Things went less well Wednesday night as the season concluded with another loss.
The Mustangs had a 3-run lead before the Devils even had an at bat. It was 8-1 at the end of two. Six more runs crossed in the 3rd. Tift held them to a run in the 4th and none in the 5th, but it was too late and Kennesaw Mountain won by a mercy rule 15-1.
Starter Zack Bullard had the game start off on the wrong foot. Reggie Pruitt, the first man in the order, tripled. Michael Atkinson singled him in, then wound up at third himself after a two-base error. Tyler Stephenson came through with a single to knock in Atkinson and with Zach Teem hitting, Stephenson made it to third on an errant pickoff attempt. A Garrett Blinkhorn double provided the third run of the frame.
Bullard would be lifted for Conner Thomas after he gave up a single and a walk to start the second. Thomas would last an inning and four hitters, Joseph Watson relieving him. Watson would be pulled for Briggs Benson, who would finish out the game.
Tift scored its lone run in the 1st. Zeke Dodson led off with a single. He advanced to second on a groundout by Blake Suggs and went to third when a grounder by Benson was bobbled. Dodson's trip around the bases was completed on an Alex Abbott single.
Dodson went 2-3 for the game. Benson, Abbott and Will Reinhardt had the remainder of the team's hits.
