TCRD offering a lifeguard training class during May

TIFTON — The Tift County Recreation Department and Donna Sledge, certified Red Cross instructor, are offering a lifeguard training class this month.

The cost is $185, which is due by Friday (final materials ordered for class on this date). Those interested can make checks payable to the Tift County Recreation Department. Payments can be mailed to P.O. Box 6, Tifton, GA 31793, or dropped off at the TCRD office at 401 N. Victory Drive.

The following prerequisites are: 15 years old and older on or before the last course day; 300-yard continuous swim with rhythmic breathing and breath control (strokes candidates may use are only the front crawl and/or breaststroke); two-minute legs only treading water (hands under arm pits, head must remain above waterline); and one-minute and 40-seconds timed event (all candidates must complete a 20-yard swim to surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to surface to swim back 20 yards on their back with both hands on the object and their face at the surface or near the surface and then pop up on deck under one minute and 40 seconds).

The following certification requirements are: attend and participate in all class sessions, demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios and pass both the section 1-CPR/AED for the professional rescuer and first aid and section 2-lifeguarding skills final written exam with minimum grades of 80 percent.

The dates are as follow (the following dates and times must be attended in their entirety):

- May 21: 6 to 10 p.m. - swim prerequisites (must complete to continue) at TCRD pool

- May 22: 6 to 10 p.m. - course work at TCRD pool

- May 23: 6 to 10 p.m. - course work at TCRD pool

- May 24: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. - course work at TCRD pool

- May 25: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - course work at TCRD pool

There will be a break for lunch on Saturday and Sunday sessions (students may bring their lunch or go off site). Sledge will be the instructor (dsledge@abac.edu). The class is being facilitated by the TCRD and held at the pool located at 202/204 Baldwin Drive (at the intersection of Baldwin and Second streets).
