Devils fall to Tri-Cities in soccer playoffs

TIFTON — While one of band of Tift County Blue Devils were hosting Tri-Cities in a playoff game, another was doing the same, albeit on the road. The travelers, the boys soccer team, were defeated by the Bulldogs up at East Point, 2-1, ending their season.

The Devils had a first half goal by Andrew Meadows off an assist by Luis Hernandez, according to coach Bobby Earls. They were up 1-0 at that point, but could not hold the lead. He said Tri-Cities did a good job capitalizing on the Devils' mistakes.

While disappointed the season has come to a close, the head coach could not be prouder of his team.

"We overachieved," Earls said, though he said he believes Tift was the better team. "We could have beaten them eight out of 10," he said.

Not only had the team not played in two weeks, the game had been delayed from Tuesday because of heavy rains that affected the entire state. The Lady Devils had their first round game against Newnan delayed Wednesday. The two teams play at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Tifton.

"I'm really proud of the boys for getting back to the playoffs," said Earls. "I told our seniors they turned the ship around." They had doubled their record from 2013, going from 7-9-1 to 14-4. Two of the wins came over region champion Colquitt County.

Tri-Cities will play Hillgrove in the second round, according to brackets posted to the GHSA.
