Panthers ready for region track championships

TIFTON — Through early Tuesday, the track team at Tiftarea Academy knew they would be participating at a region track meet today. They just were not sure where.

Coach Ryan Branch said Monday that the meet was scheduled for Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany, but if the event it was hosting was rained out Tuesday, TIftarea would be the hosts. The rains came, but it was not enough to change plans. Branch confirmed Tuesday afternoon that they would be on the road.

"We've had a great year," he said.

He gives most of his credit to both his staff and his crew. Dan Henderson and Newell "Sarge" Dorsey are his assistants. Dorsey will be honored next Wednesday when the annual Sarge Dorsey Youth Invitational is held at the school.

On his teams, "we've been led by our seniors," he said. "They've done an exceptional job.

The boys roster consists of John Adams, James Allen Bryant, Logan Carswell, Jackson Cook, Luke Dean, Taylor Dukes, Taylor Folsom, Josh Hancock, Montreal Henry, Robert Johnson, Connor Kozma, Mitchell Layfield, Charlie Massey, Noah McMinn, Ethan Mims, Wesley O'Quinn, Layne Powell, Alex Richter, Austin Stripling, Wright Turner, Jake Varnadoe and Nathan Carswell.

The Lady Panthers are Rainee Baker, Alyssa Brown, Neeli Fortson, Brooke Hancock, Kaycee Goodman, Bree Harper, Marlee Marlowe, Missy McKay, Aubree McMinn, Ali Rippy, Madi Smith, Morgan Strenth, Grace Hall and Maddie Harper.

The state meet is also scheduled to be at Hugh Mills and takes place April 24.
