Marlowe mashes two in Tiftarea blowout

TIFTON — Just two days after the Tiftarea Academy Panthers defeated the No. 1 Deerfield-Windsor Knights in Chula to take the region lead, they took on the Westwood Wildcats in Camilla. It was not a long trip to Westwood, as Tiftarea only needed four innings to win, 17-1.

The Panthers were only held scoreless in one frame. They started the day with three runs, added three more in the 3rd and exploded for 11 in the 4th.

Rob Flick scored in the 1st after a walk, while Thomas Spurlin and Devin Paulk crossed the plate after recording singles.

In the 3rd, it was a leadoff single from Cade Marlowe, followed by a walk to Greer Howard. Spurlin later hit a sac fly to bring in Marlowe and Howard came around on a base hit by Noah McMinn. Paulk scored on a wild pitch.

The final inning started with a Flick single. Marlowe blasted a 2-run homer to start the scoring melee. Eight men and five runs later, he was at the plate against and this time the bases were loaded. Marlowe smashed the pitch center for a grand slam and his 2nd homer of the evening.

Westwood scored their only run in the 4th, but it was far from enough to avoid the mercy rule.

Marlowe finished 3-4 with six runs batted in. Paulk and McMinn each had two hits and Flick, Howard, Spurlin, Rhett Rycroft and John Thomas Tanner, Bo Vickers and Sam Varnadoe each had one.

Flick was the man on the mound, surrendering only a single hit and one walk while striking out six.

Tiftarea return home to play Glenwood Academy from Phenix City, Ala. on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
