TIFTON — This weekend in area sports, the Tift County Blue Devils travel to Camden County for area wrestling championships and basketball seasons are getting down to the nitty gritty.

The area mat meet will be at Camden County. Junior varsity will also be going. Sectionals will be Feb. 7 before the state championships take place on Feb. 13.

The Blue Devil basketball teams will be hosting the Lowndes Vikings Friday and Valdosta Wildcats Saturday. Both are region contests and it is the first time they have played Valdosta this season.

Tiftarea Academy's hoops team will be playing at home Friday against the Deerfield-Windsor Knights.

Turner County goes to Clinch County Friday and to Lakeland against Lanier County Saturday. Region 2-A mate Irwin County will be at Echols County Friday.

Berrien plays at 1-AA arch-rival Cook Friday before hosting a pair of winless Baker County teams Saturday. This will be Cook's only weekend game.

Despite the winter weather bearing down on the state, Cook and Fitzgerald were able to play Tuesday night. In games at Fitzgerald, the Lady 'Canes beat Cook, 52-51 and the Hornets won the boys contest, 50-34.
