Blue Devils win two finals at BDI

TIFTON — Jesse Snow and Nick McCall each had wins Saturday as the Tift County Blue Devils finished 4th in the Blue Devil Invitational.

The last match of the evening, all eyes were on Snow and Valdosta's Julian Fraser, with fans looking down from the upper deck and wrestlers and coaches forming a square around the mat.

Fraser took an early lead, but Snow tied it late to send it into an extra session. The battle took its toll on both and had to be stopped twice to address Snow's wounds. He was scratched on both his forearm and leg. He was able to grab the advantage late in overtime and held on for the last minute for the slim 4-3 victory.

McCall pinned his opponent in the 115-pound finals. Coach Shawn Watson said this was the 2nd straight year he had won the division.

Lowndes won the BDI with 243.5 points with 2nd going to Valdosta at 215.5. Lee County was 3rd with 188.5 and Tift was 4th at 182. Other area schools placing were Irwin (6th), Berrien (7th) and Cook (12th). Thirteen teams participated.

Tift also sent a B-team, but they did not compete for points. Watson said he was sure they would have placed in the top 10 if they did.

"We're wrestling better," he said. "This was a lot better tourney for us."

Dylan Musgrove led off the finals with a 2nd place finish at 108 pounds against Cameron Warren of Valdosta, losing a slim 2-1 battle.

Quen Campbell had a 3rd place finish in 128. Vontrell Calhoun also took 3rd, in 140. Rayder Schemmel was 5th at 154, his win coming in an all-Tift battle; he defeated teammate Dalton Burks, 7-2.

In 162 pounds, Gunnar Schemmel pinned Deon Williams of Valdosta for 3rd. Devin Lewis was 5th in 172. Jake Pratt was 6th at 122, Mack Strickland was 5th at 140 as was Jimmy Scarborough in 147 Devin Lewis at 172 and Sam Dunn at 197.

The Berrien Rebels had a 2nd place finish in 147, Dalton Ingram finishing 2nd. Evan Paulk from Irwin County was 3rd in that division. Cook's Artaro Perez was 2nd in 162.

The Rebels also copped a 1st place finish in 184 when Ivan Herrera outlasted his opponent, 3-2. Last year's state champion, Hunter Kelley, finished 2nd in his class. Micah Powers for Irwin was 2nd in 222.
