Carolyn Carter Howington

POULAN — Carolyn Carter Howington, 78, of Poulan died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 at her residence. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today  at Banks Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Poulan Cemetery. The Rev. Chris Turner will officiate.

Mrs. Howington was born October 1, 1935 in Poulan to the late Rufus Posey and Janie Belle Statham Carter. She had lived in Poulan since 2005 moving here from Deer Park, Texas, where she had lived for many years. Mrs. Howington was a homemaker who enjoyed making porcelain dolls. Mr. and Mrs. Howington celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary, October 18, 2013. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Howington was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Dianne Anderson on October 17, 2004.

Survivors include her husband, James F. Howington of Poulan; a daughter, Debbie H. Hyatt (Steve) of Putney; a son, James M. “Mitch” Howington (Rosa Lee) of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren, Charles Brent Balkcom (Patricia), Leigha Marie Balkcom Anthony (Tony Paul), William Townsend Hyatt; great-grandchildren, Alexander Brent Balkcom, Helena Patricia Balkcom, Aaron Brett Anthony, Hanna Dianne Anthony and Maximus Beau Anthony; sisters, Faye Hurst and Ann Umbarger, both of Poulan; and brothers, Raymond Carter of Gainesville and Ricky Carter of Albany.

    LEOs and first responders honored at banquet

    A room full of local law enforcement and first responders were honored Thursday night by the Tifton Elks Lodge at their annual Public Safety Officer Appreciation and Awards Banquet for their service in the community.
    Prior to the awards being given out, Louise Spradley, who organized the banquet, welcomed everyone, and the invocation and pledge were led by the Tift County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard.
