Alex Abbott inks deal with Los Angeles Angels

TIFTON — Alex Abbott earned his halo Friday morning. The former Tift County Blue Devil signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in a ceremony at Diamond Exchange.

Abbott was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on the second day of the Major League Baseball draft June 6. He was a 6th round pick, the 179th player chosen overall.

He was the first position player picked by the team in the draft and one of only three high school players selected, according to the Angels. Kyle Kirk, his high school head coach at Tift County High, said Friday that Abbott will be sent to Tempe, Ariz., to play with the club's Arizona (Rookie) League affiliate, the Tempe Angels.

If he had not signed with the team, Abbott had a baseball scholarship waiting for him at the University of Florida. In high school, he was a four-time 1st team All-Region pick and the team advanced to the state tournament all four years.

According to Baseball Reference, Abbott was the first Blue Devils player drafted since Israel Troupe was picked by the Rockies in 2007 in the 31st round.
