Not enough ‘love’ to help man charged at motel

TIFTON — Tifton police officers were called to the Carson Motel, located on 7th Street in Tifton, in reference to an individual who refused to check out.

What officers found was a naked man, a crack pipe and crack cocaine.

Officer Jasmine Carden reported that the complainant, Narjesh Patel, said he had knocked on the door of room 139 numerous times where 45-year-old Steve Allen Deal, of 125 N. Highway 319 in Tifton, had been staying, but Deal had repeatedly slammed the door in Patel's face.

Carden, Patel and two other officers approached the door and requested that Deal open the door, but he refused. Patel then opened the door and upon entering, officers discovered Deal lying on the bed naked.

Deal, while touching himself, began saying, "I love you," and "I love God," to the officers and Patel. Carden reported she asked Deal to put some clothing on, since there were other people present in the motel.

Deal refused to do so, and said, "I love you. I need some help. Help me. God is punishing me."

At this point, officers noticed a crack pipe in Deal's right hand. When Carden retrieved the pipe, she noticed several pieces of crack cocaine on the mattress. Deal was then informed that he was being placed under arrest. The other officers were able to slide a pair of jean shorts onto Deal.

As officers attempted to handcuff Deal, he began to struggle, and refused to follow instruction from the officers to place his hands behind his back. Officers were able to cuff his left wrist, but not the right.

Deal kicked his legs and refused to relinquish his right arm, holding it tight to his body.

As officers struggled with him and tried to remove him from the room, Deal grabbed the doorway, and said, "I love you Daddy."

Carden reported since they were unable too free Deal's arm to lock the handcuffs, she kneed Deal twice and kicked him in the groin, but to no avail.

Backup assistance was called during the struggle, and Carden reported she asked for an officer with a taser.

Once outside the doorway, all three officers were able to take Deal down to the ground. Deal kept his right arm close to his body, still refusing to comply with officer commands. Due to the struggle and Deal's resistance, Carden said she kneed Deal several times in his right side and rib area, and struck him in the buttocks twice with an ASP baton. He was also dry-stunned by another officer with a taser, but with little effect.

After several more minutes of struggling, Carden kneed Deal several more times, and was able to get his right arm free and place it behind his back, where handcuffs were properly placed on both wrists.

Deal was transported to the Tift County Law Enforcement Center, where he was charged with possession of crack cocaine and obstruction of an officer, a misdemeanor.
