Georgia State Patrol troopers were out in full force over the Memorial Day weekend. The 78-hour holiday travel period began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight Monday.
Sgt. Jeromy C. Roberts, assistant post commander of the GSP Tifton Post 13, said Post 13 troopers, covering Tift, Cook and Berrien counties, stopped 247 vehicles, issued 149 citations and 140 warnings and made three arrests for driving under the influence. They also investigated six wrecks with three injuries and no fatalities.
Roberts said the Memorial Day holiday travel period ended Monday night with 17 traffic deaths reported across the state. Troopers investigated nine of the 17 fatal crashes.
During the 2013 Memorial Day weekend, state troopers investigated 650 crashes that resulted in 366 injuries and six fatalities. In addition to the traffic crash investigations last year, troopers arrested 310 people for DUI while issuing 9,288 citations and 15,328 warnings.
