A proclamation was presented to former councilman Dave Hetzel with the Tift Area Greenway Association (TAGA) at a recent City Council meeting for National Bike Month.
Mayor Jamie Cater read a proclamation that states TAGA, as well as other organizations and independent cyclists throughout the city and state, are promoting greater public awareness in bicycle operation and safety education in an effort to reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities. Tifton has been named a bicycle friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists.
Cater, on behalf of the City Council, proclaimed May 2014 as Bike Month in the city of Tifton and encourages citizens to participate in promoting public awareness of the benefits of bicycling.
He thanked Hetzel, who commented that TAGA's mission statement is to foster the creation and safe use of quality bicycle and pedestrian networks and greenways for a healthy Tiftarea.
"So, we're all supporting a healthy Tifton," Hetzel said.
Cater also said there are a lot of dedicated people in the community and some are willing to volunteer to serve on local boards. Jim Lever was then sworn in to the Tifton Housing Authority.
"This is a hero," Cater said about Lever. "He was in Vietnam. He's a quiet hero."
He thanked him for his service in Vietnam and said they're glad to have him serve on the Tifton Housing Authority Board.
Also, Utilities Manager Donna Pate noted the city of Tifton recently attended the annual Municipal Gas Authority Convention and they again won the HEAT (Heating Energy Assistance Team) award for 2013. The city of Tifton and Tift County had the most donations toward families who cannot afford to pay their heating bill.
"We're very thankful to the citizens of Tifton and Tift County," Pate said.
