Tift County High School valedictorian and STAR student Collin Summerlin was recognized at a recent Tift County Board of Education work session.
"Not only is he our school STAR student, but he is the region STAR student. And that doesn't happen very often," said TCHS Principal Kim Seigler, as board members and visitors in the audience clapped. "So, we are very proud of Collin."
Summerlin was named a 2014 PAGE STAR Student for PAGE STAR Region 10. According to a previous Gazette article, the announcement was made by PAGE Executive Director Dr. Allene Magill during the Region 10 PAGE STAR banquet, which was held at the Valdosta Country Club March 13. Summerlin selected Debbie Salter, an English teacher at TCHS, as his STAR teacher.
Seigler said she had talked with the guidance counselor to see if there were any updates about Summerlin. She said the one thing she wanted her to share with the board was that Summerlin is a "fantastic, nice, super young man," which stands out. She added he's one of those who they're privileged to know and have at TCHS.
Seigler told board members that Summerlin finally made his decision on what college he will be attending — Brown University. He said he plans to study neuroscience.
Among his list of clubs and awards are: honors literature award, AP United States history award and AP language and composition award, Senior Superlative Most Outstanding Male, Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club, Beta Club, varsity tennis team and more. He has also done some volunteering in the community and works part time as a clerk at Reinhardt, Whitley, Summerlin and Pittman. His mother, Karen, was also present at the work session.
The board said they were very proud of Summerlin.
