Blue Devils blast Panthers in another double soccer shutout

TIFTON — The Tift County Blue Devils earned another soccer home double shutout Friday night as they celebrated senior night against the Americus-Sumter Panthers. The Devils posted a 3-0 win while victory went to the Lady Devils with a 10-0 score.

The Lady Devils needed just 46 total minutes to dispatch of their opponents. Ahead 7-0 at the half, a shortened clock was the first mercy rule measure. Three goals in six minutes, which made the score 10-0, was the other.

Two players had hat tricks in the game. Abby Kay Choate led with four goals and Sarah Alberson had three. Alberson also had three assists.  Other goals belonged to Blakeley Bergeron, Sloan Fletcher and Kristen DelToro. DelToro's was the first goal of the 2nd half, coming three minutes in off a corner kick.

Besides Alberson, assists were picked up by DelToro (2) and Bergeron, Choate, Taylor MacDonald and Taylor Nimmo.

The Blue Devils did not score as often as their counterparts, but did beat them in time needed to put the ball in the net. Jonathan Alvarado needed just 34 seconds to score off an assist from Andrew Meadows.

Luis Hernandez  found a clearing 16 minutes later and with a Panther defender at his heels, was able to poke it by the keeper for the second goal of the evening. Americus-Sumter's defense would tighten for the rest of the half, but they would have problems establishing any offense against Tift. They only had two serious scoring attempts in the 1st and that was cut to one in the 2nd.

The Devils maintained their slightly uneasy lead throughout the 2nd, but received some insurance when Cameron Earls assisted Alvarado with five minutes left.

It will be a busy week for soccer. The teams travel to Colquitt County Tuesday before wrapping up the region schedule Friday at Camden County. As stands, it will be a meeting of two undefeated girls teams.
