Blue Devils smash Rams in soccer debut

TIFTON —  If Friday's soccer games are any indication, 2014 could be the year of the Tift County Blue Devil. Both teams posted shutouts in their first action of the year, scrimmages against the Worth County Rams.

The Lady Devils won, 6-0, taking a lead before Worth even had a chance to blink. Moving the ball to their end, where it would stay firmly entrenched all game, Abby Kay Choate scored her first goal at 55 seconds.

Choate would also have the second score, coming at 9:25 in the 1st half. Five minutes later, Marianne Walker put one in the net following a penalty kick.

As good as the Lady Devils were offensively, their defense was even stronger. Worth only briefly had the ball on their offensive end and had no shots on goal.

Following intermission, Tift started right where they left off. Blakeley Bergeron scored a minute into the half and the rout continued.

At about 37 minutes, Nikki Vellidis faked the goalie and had an empty net for a goal and at 18:48, Sarah Alberson had the final score.

Even with heavy substitutions on Tift County's part, the Lady Rams were not able to overcome the defensive pressure.  Any slips caused resulted in the ball being moved right back to the Lady Devils' end.

The evening would not get better for Worth, as they surrendered five goals in the boys contest.

Luis Hernandez scored twice and Jonathan Alvarado, Damion Terrazas and Javier Olguin each had one as they dominated, 5-0.

Greg Soto had 3 saves in the 1st half. Moises Chavez came in after intermission and had a pair of saves.
