Tift County High boys basketball involved in Friday bus accident

TIFTON — The Tift County Blue Devils boys basketball team had an unpleasant start to their weekend hoops battles Friday afternoon.

The team bus was involved in an accident east of Waycross while traveling to Brunswick.

A recreational vehicle pulled out in front of the bus, said Sgt. Lisa Bowen of the Georgia State Patrol. She said the driver was expected to face charges. The accident occurred, she said, just east of Blount Road on US Highway 82.

Bowen said the driver and a passenger were both taken to the hospital. She said that a couple of students on the bus had minor injuries and were treated by paramedics on the scene.

She said the bus had had window damage on the driver's side.

Head boys basketball coach Dr. Eric Holland said in a text message Friday that everyone was OK. Athletic director Rusty Smith said that Ware County schools sent them a bus to allow them to continue on to Brunswick.
