Rants & Raves - January 2

A writer notes that for every building with any historic or aesthetic significance there are many others that have no such significance. This pretty much describes the Historic District. The city should look to preservation of those buildings worthy of preservation rather than including half the town. Their approach makes no sense and is an obvious drag on progress. The old ice house is a good example.
Ladies and gentlemen: Please read the constitution before you quote it. People keep dragging out the First Amendment to defend the Duck Dynasty star. While I believe that everyone has the right to their own opinion, the first amendment does not protect you from repercussions. It protects you from going to jail for voicing your opinion, and it prevents a law being put into place that won't let you practice your religion. It does not mean you won't get fired for saying something inflamatory on TV. For example, the first amendment protects your right to tell your boss off, but it won't keep you from getting fired.
I vote at every opportunity. I rarely vote "for" anyone. I'm usually voting against the other candidate. For me, each election cycle usually boils down to a choice between cat litter and cow pies. Cat litter is really nasty and stinks, but it's generally more compact. Cow pies make good fertilizer and can be burned for fuel. Though, to be fair, cow pies are not exactly clean and there is just so much more of it. For example, in 2008 I voted against the possibility of Sarah Palin ever becoming president because she is dangerously uninformed. I voted against Mitt Romney in 2012 because he is a plutocratic multi-millionaire who has, in all likelihood, paid less in taxes than has my teenaged niece. If the Republican Party wants to win presidential elections they will have to field better candidates than their current crop of presidential hopefuls.
