Lady Devils fall in low-scoring contest

MOULTRIE — The Tift County Lady Devils had a one-day jump in the Christmas competition department over the Blue Devils, but will have to wait another day to pick up a win. They were defeated, 33-26, by the Norland (Fla.) Lady Vikings in the Colquitt Christmas Shoot-Out.

The Lady Devils led for nearly all of the 1st quarter, but a pair of baskets by Kayla Roberts first tied the game, then gave them the lead with 20 seconds left.

Tift would not see an advantage for the rest of the game.

Norland never pulled away, though. The Lady Devils struggled in the 2nd period, as the Lady Vikings built a 9-point lead with 2:30 remaining. Tift seemed in danger of dropping out of the game completely, but snapped back to life with a Brecklyn Greene 3-pointer to make it 18-12.  Dorian Jordan hit two shots, including one off a steal to make it a 4-point deficit at halftime.

A minute into the 3rd, Alexis Johnson's lay-up cut it to 20-18, but Norland rallied for 5 straight points. It was at that time they began slowing down the game, going to a stalling offense. Their lead after 3 was 28-23 as the teams combined for only three baskets over the last 4 minutes of the quarter.

Norland continued to stall in the 4th quarter, keeping the Lady Devils at bay with precision passes and numerous offensive rebounds. They scored no baskets at all in the final period and hit only 5 of 11 free throws, but that would be enough. Tift only managed one basket and a single charity shot of their own; the Lady Vikes' defense allowed no points in the last 2:30.

Jordan was the only Lady Devil to make it to double-digits, scoring 10. Greene had 5 and Staceyanna Murrell and Alexis Johnson each had 4.

Tift County will get a chance to start a new winning streak today. They face Rickards, Fla., at 7 p.m.
