Turner County sweeps Portal in Friday basketball

ASHBURN — The Turner County High basketball teams swept visiting Portal High Friday night at home.

In the girls game, Turner garnered a 42-33 victory.

The Turner Lady Rebels jumped out to a, 10-8 first quarter lead behind Taylor Daniels, who had 6 points in the period. In the first minute of the second quarter, the visiting Lady Panthers hit a 3-pointer to take the lead. Turner would continue to fight back and scored 6 points in the quarter.

The Portal 3-pointer was the Lady Panthers’ only basket of the quarter, as Turner led 16-11 at the half.

In the second half, both teams were able to find the basket more as five different Lady Rebels would score one basket each, including two 3-pointers. In the last quarter, Portal actually outscored Turner by one point but the Lady Rebels had built a big enough lead it did not matter.

Mylashia Yancey led Turner with 11 points and Daniels added 10 points.

The Lady Rebels improved to 6-1 on the season.

In the boys game, Portal showed why they were undefeated, as they have a similar style of game as the Rebels.

But, Turner would emerge with a 75-54 victory.

Portal got the edge early by leading 18-13, after the first quarter.

Turner coach Tyrone Kellogg made a minor adjustment and got some points from seniors Nate Martin and Antonio Graddic to propel the Rebels to the lead in the second quarter. Graddic scored 10 points, while Martin scored 6. Turner led 33-28 at the half.

Portal would come out of the locker room and tie the game at 37-37 all after just little over two minutes of action. However, the Rebels dug down deep and maintained a lead at the end of the quarter, but Portal had decreased the lead by one point, 46-42.

The last quarter was an explosive quarter for the Rebels as they would score 29 to Portal’s 12.

Graddic ended the game with a double-double, 23 points and 18 rebounds. Martin added 12 points.  Quan Williams and Malik Brown both added 9 points each to help the Rebels pull out a tough victory over the Panthers.

The Rebels improved to 5-2 on the season.

Turner faced off against Clinch County Saturday night in Homerville. Those results were not known at presstime.
